Incorporating sheepskin in your dream home with Thrifted & Upcycled pieces

Decorating for your Dream Home

Your ideal aesthetic can seem like an unattainable dream when you’re scrolling instagram.  The mid century modern vibe you see in your feed looks like it came  straight out of Article.com and the cool antique dealer you follow sells pieces that are so far out of your price range it hurts.  Maybe the Boho style is up your alley but even with this less structured style it can be hard to find pieces in your price range that fit the aesthetic you are aiming for.  Achieving these pinterest worthy looks in your home decor doesn’t have to break the bank though!   There are hundreds of budget friendly pieces waiting for you at thrift stores, on your local nextdoor/buy nothing page and a strategically placed sheepskin rug can bring your room together!

One of the most cost effective (and by far the most fun)  ways to find pieces within your budget is thrifting.  Thrifting home decor means visiting local second hand shops, consignment stores and antique dealers and scouring them for pieces that fit your desired look and budget.  While I personally believe that thrifting your home decor is not only environmentally friendly but also one of the best ways to spend a Friday night I understand that it can seem like a daunting task; the shelves are crammed, nothing is in order and the experience may be overwhelming at first.  The best advice I can give is: RELAX!

This truly is the most valuable piece of advice when it comes to creating cohesive rooms out of thrifted decor.   You are not going to find what you are looking for!   At least, not immediately or all at once.  The rooms you see on lifestyle blogs or Instagram roomporn accounts took years and years of dedicated searching.  You need to go in with an open mind and absolutely no plan.  If you go out searching for the perfect Royere-inspired coffee table you will never find it.   I swear, there is an unwritten universal rule when it comes to thrifting: If you are looking for it, thou will not find it. If you ease up though… you just might find a matching pair of table lamps that are perfect for your living room and look like they came straight from Don Draper’s bedroom.  Another way to help find pieces that are perfect is to manage expectations and be creative!  An old armchair might be stained and faded but has the perfect shape and bones.  Reupholstering is a great but often prohibitively expensive option.  A cheaper alternative is to drape a gorgeous sheepskin throw over it.  You cover any unsightly signs of age while adding natural texture to the room.

When it comes to creating a cohesive look out of thrifted pieces an easy way to achieve this is to upcycle.   The couch at your local Salvation Army may be the perfect burnt orange colour for your midcentury living room decor but it has a hideous skirt that makes the potentially perfect piece look like it would fit in your grandmother’s basement.  No fear though, skirts come off!  A couple hours of your time and a few tutorial videos later you will have a gorgeous focal feature for you to build your living room around.  Upcycling pieces allow you more freedom to be creative because while all of the obvious pieces, like the teak credenza, are snatched up you can use a few coats of paint to transform more modern dressers and TV stands.  It can be hard to envision upcycled pieces fitting together but another thing to remember is that interior designers use rugs to pull together a mismatched room.  An eight pelt sheepskin rug will soften the sharp edges of a coffee table while the natural wool fibers compliment almost every other material.   A room full of color can be grounded with a muted shade like grey or white.

Picking a color pallet is another way to ensure that your room decor won’t seem disconnected.  If you are going for a more Boho inspired design then muted pinks, peaches and blues could be colours to look for in your furniture that will help guide you when browsing second hand stores.  These colours could also be incorporated in textiles or throw pillows, like light  mongolian sheepskin pillows.  If mid century modern is what you are going for then caramel colored leather furniture chocolate brown pillows are complimented perfectly with an ivory natural sheepskin.   Choose a color pallet suits your dream home decor and decide if you want the furniture to be more muted and accent walls to pop or vice-versa. Keeping this in mind will mean that every piece of furniture or nick nack that you give a home will fit in.

To create a cohesive theme in your home decor you don’t need to spend the big bucks.   Thrift stores and upcycled pieces combined with natural and elegant elements like sheepskin rugs are your key to creating the aesthetic you want and under-budget. It takes patience and dedication but eventually you will not only have your dream room but you’ll also have enjoyed the process of getting there!    It can be incredibly rewarding to spend time finding pieces that are special to you and then styling them to suit your home decor.   Mixing thrifted furniture with natural pieces like a sheepskin rug will create the perfect home vibe that just screams you while also not costing you an exorbitant amount of money.
