Sheepskin Garment Care

Sheepskin is fairly durable, but there are things that you should know in order to properly care for these products.

When it comes to storage, be sure to store your sheepskin garment in an area or closet that is not exposed to sunlight and heat. Light will cause the color of the sheepskin to fade, and heat can cause sheepskin to dry out. Make sure it has room to breathe and is not crushed by other garments. Ensure storing is done in a breathable cloth bag, but never in plastic.

Avoid insecticides, moth-proofing, and other chemicals around on your sheepskin this includes perfume, hairspray and makeup. Perfume contains alcohol, which can dry a sheepskin pelt. Once a perfume gets onto your sheepskin (including cedar from a cedar chest) it can be there to stay.

Most sheepskin garments can be washed in a washing machine or hand washed with our Eucalan wash cleaner. When washing, it is important to steer clear of any detergents that have bleach and enzymes in them. This will cause the sheepskin to break down, therefore decreasing it’s lifespan. Please resist the temptation to speed the drying process with the use of a drying machine as it will destroy the sheepskin. Let the garment dry naturally outside or in a well ventilated area.

For deep cleaning, have it cleaned by a professional cleaner that specializes in leather, sheepskin, or fur. Besides just cleaning, a professional cleaner will condition your sheepskin. Glazing is a process that replenishes oils to maintain a sheepskin or leather products longevity. You may consider taking your sheepskin article to a furrier for glazing if you find that it needs to be refreshed. You can also purchase our sheepskin protector to preserve the soft feel of your sheepskin.

Suede and leather can be hard to clean. It’s advised that you have suede cleaned professionally. However there are a few steps you can take if it’s very light soiling:

  • Rub suede with a clean dry towel – always rub suede in one direction.
  • Remove the stains or marks by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser.
  • Brush your suede with a suede brush, which has soft bristles with wire inserts (shoe stores sell these for suede shoes).

When cared for properly, a quality shearling sheepskin garment or home décor item can last a lifetime.
